Making Thinking Visible in Chinese Classrooms | 中文课堂的可视化思维教学 by Chuyu Cheng
This presentation will share some common thinking routines that can help facilitate classroom discussions and enhance students' engagement with the learning material. 本次分享将通过几个案例展示在不同水平的中文课堂行之有效的可视化思维教学手段。
Chuyu started her career in the U.S. where she taught in a private school. She then joined ISB and has taught different levels in middle school and high school in the past ten years. She is passionate about creating a positive learning environment for her students and utilizing effective teaching strategies.

The ISF Academy Bilingual Program by Dr. Levi Xiaogang Gao
In the macro context of international education which is dominated by English, how to continuously develop a high standard of students' Chinese language proficiency and increase their Chinese cultural awareness has been a huge challenge for many. Limited resources, time constraints as well as the need to realistically consider Western college admission requirements has often hampered our efforts. The ISF Academy of Hong Kong adapted a multi-level approach to counter these difficulties. In making bilingualism a centerpiece of the school culture, we changed our operation both structurally and academically. Many language and culture immersive programs with interconnective natures were established and started to attract students. A new day to day school culture has gradually formed. In order to do one big thing we must do many small things – this is the strategy we derived in practice to face the challenges of bilingual education.
Dr. Levi Xiaogang Gao was born in. He received his PhD degree in Modern Chinese Literature from The Chinese Academy of Social Science. Dr Gao has been living and working in Hong Kong since 1998. He worked in Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong, Chinese International School and the Hong Kong ISF Academy. He is now the Principal Examiner of Chinese A: Literature. Dr. Gao is a published writer of both scholarly and story books.
小剛生於北京,中國社會科學院現當代中國文學博士。自1998年起在香港生活及工作,先後在李寶椿聯合世界書院、漢基國際學校和弘立書院擔任教學及行政管理工作,從2004年起至今擔任IB中文課程的考官和工作坊主持人,現為中文A:文學科目的主考官。高博士亦擔任香港大學教育學院和香港教育大學的客座講師。發表多部學術專論及小說創作。
Assessment Objective and Task Design for Chinese as a Second Language Programme | 中文第二语言课程评估目标和任务设计 by Huiling Yu
Assessment task design has never been easy for teachers of Chinese as a second or additional language. Learning and assessment objectives usually set a high standard for students in terms of creative and critical thinking or higher-order thinking skills. On the other hand, teachers may struggle to ensure the assessment reliability and validity as students’ language proficiency is limited. There are different approaches with regard to assessment task design across major international language programmes. This talk aims to evaluate the practices of in an attempt to better understand the situation that Chinese teachers are facing and find possible solutions. 对于中文作为第二语言或其他语言的教师来说,设计评估任务不是件容易事。 学习和评估目标通常设置高标准,以求达到创造性和批判性思维之高度,培养高阶思维技能。 另一方面,由于学生的语言能力有限,教师可能难以确保评估的信度和效度。主要国际语言课程设计评估任务有不同的方法。本讲座旨在审视不同的评估实践模式,以更好地了解中文教师所面临的情况并找到可能的解决方案。
Yu Huiling has a range of experience in teaching of both local and international curriculum, programme development, pedagogical leadership, school authorisation and evaluation, assessment and professional training. Huiling is a published author of IB DP study guides, and is currently working as Learning and Teaching Adviser of English Schools Foundation.

How to Implement Bilingual Units of Inquiry | 如何实施中英双语探究单元 by Jinghua Hou
This presentation will introduce the practices of implementing bilingual units of inquiry (UOI) for Upper Elementary students. Taking the Grade 6 students' learning as an example, the presenter will share how to design the units of inquiry, implement with students and do work exhibition and reflection. It integrates Chinese language and culture as well as different disciplines holistically.
本次报告将介绍如何在小学高段实施中英双语探究单元。以六年级学生的学习为例,报告将分享如何进行单元设计,引导学生实施探究单元,并进行作品展示和反思,以及如何在教学中嵌入中文与中国文化。
Dr. Jinghua Hou has over 15 years teaching experience, and she has been a bilingual homeroom teacher at Canadian International School in Singapore over the past five years.

What Does a Classroom Look Like in a Distance Learning Environment? | 远程学习下中的中文教室 by Shengnan (Penny) Ma
Patrick Goertz (2015) discussed the 10 signs of a 21st century classroom, which is a good read for educators to reflect on their teaching at this challenging time. One of the signs is technology integration, which involves more than just use of technology, but students using technology to achieve goals in a different way that was impossible before. Meanwhile, there are many factors teachers need to consider when moving into distance learning and technology integration. Network issues, training for students and teachers equipment, social emotional learning needs. In this presentation, I will introduce and demonstrate other alternatives such as Microsoft Office 365, Apple Education Application, Book Creator, and SeeSaw to facilitate Chinese learning and teaching in a distance learning environment.
远程学习下的教室是什么样子呢?Patrick Goertz (2015) 探讨的21世纪的教室具备的十个特征,为教育者们提供了很好的参照。而其中的一个表现即为科技工具的融合。在这种远程教学的环境下,除了科技工具的使用,还有很多因素需要老师们考虑。如:网络、老师和学生对工具的使用、社交情感类的学习体验等等。在本次分享中,我将着重从语言学习的角度出发,与老师们分享可操作性强的工具与策略,更好的支援中文教室内的语言学习。
Shengnan is a licensed K-6 Elementary educator with a Master in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and Instructional Technology. She has IB PYP experience, an inquiry mindset, and a passion to integrate technology in teaching and learning. She uses technology frequently in her teaching, which allows students to create and interact with digital content to empower their creativity and innovation.
